Power Our Playground: Our Renewable Energy Design

Project: Power Our Playground

Stage: Stage 3, Year 6

Syllabus: NSW NESA Science and Technology K-6

Context and Strand: Physical World

Design and Production focus: Producing and implementing

Duration Approximately : 8-10 hours

Selected outcomes:

plans and conducts scientific investigations to answer testable questions, and collects and summarises data to communicate conclusions ST3-1WS-S

plans and uses materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity ST3-2DP-T

Explains how energy is transformed from one form to another ST3-8PW-ST

Driving question: How can we design and construct a renewable- energy device that transforms energy to per from useful function in our school?

Students will investagite energy transformations before designing and physically producing a renewable- energy prototype.

WELCOME YEAR 6 AND FUTURE INVENTORS

Power Our playground: The renewable Energy challenge

WELCOME, YOUNG ENGINEERS!
Our school uses energy every day to power lights, computers, fans and other equipment. But what if we could use renewable sources such as sunlight or wind to produce some of the energy our school needs. Our school is looking for innovative ideas to make our spaces more sustainable, and your engineering team has been selected to help!
YOUR CHALLENGE
During this project, you will become a scientist, designer and engineer. You will investigate how energy can be transformed from one form to another and conduct a scientific investigation to discover which factors could make a renewable-energy device more effective. Your team will then use your scientific evidence to plan a solution. You will select and bring in appropriate materials and tools before measuring, cutting, joining and constructing your prototype safely and sustainably.

But engineers rarely create a perfect solution on their first attempt, During activity 3 you will test you prototype, collect evidence and identify any problems to make improvements. At the end of the project, your team will present its renewable energy solution and explain how energy is transfomred to perform its intented function.

CAN YOUR TEAM HELP POWER OUR SCHOOL'S FUTURE?

Message From Our Princple

Our School Is looking for ways to become more sustainable. Your year 6 Class has been selected to investigate how renewable energy could perform useful functions around our school. We need you to investigate, design , build and test a solution. Good Luck, Year 6

Happy Creating!

Your Principle

Activity 1

Energy Engineers: Learn how to investigate energy transformations through investigations.

Activity 2

Plan a solution: Using evidence from activity 1 begin to plan and implement serval renewable energy devices

Activity 3

Plan, Test and improve: Following your project plan, begin creating your device!
